It can be lonely out there for candidates refusing campaign contributions from special interest groups. Without the support of establishment political interests, it has been difficult to get elected. That's beginning to change.
Strengthened with diverse sources of information and revolutionary ways to communicate, the people are making a comeback.
Tell us who is taking a leadership role in this movement. Who are the candidates* refusing contributions from corporations and unions?
*If possible, please include a link to a webpage or Facebook page which states their stance. This helps us and our supporters verify the information. We'll then follow up by checking filings with the Secretary of State.
JM (Maria J) Fay
I, Matthew Hess, would like to be added to the list.

I am a candidate for Douglas County Commissioner in district 2 of the County. I am running primarily to cut regulations and permit requirements that are hampering businesses of all sizes in Douglas County. I Haven't taken one dime of special interest money. I have signed both the CUT pledge & 10th Amendment center pledge. I have also been endorsed by Gary Johnson & Liberty-Candidates.org.
All Green Party candidates
I'm surprised that no one ever mentions the fact that Green Party candidates have always refused campaign contributions from corporations and special interest groups. Every single Green Party candidate running this November should be listed! Please see Susan Hall's list of GP Presidential and state-wide candidates below. I will be running for El Paso County Commissioner District Two representing a platform guided by the Ten Key Values of the U.S Green Party. You can see what we stand for at the following websites: http://www.gp.org/index.php http://www.coloradogreenparty.org/ www.gp-ppr.org
Thank you
Hi, thank you for your comment. We have heard this several times. Unfortunately, in checking with a few green party candidates, at least one of them did take money from left-leaning groups which we still considered special interest money. The candidates must accept donations from individuals only. Therefore, we now check with each individual candidate and ask that they send us a link to a website or facebook page for confirmation. This also allows our supporters to verify this information for themselves. Susan Hall was added as soon as we confirmed her position. We do the same with all other candidate we locate or who come to us. Thanks, again.
I have to wonder if Clean Slate is Partial & Deceptive
have to wonder if this is a partial list, which would make at least deceptive, as I was contacted some time ago as qualifying for this list & in fact before the person I am running against, Jared Polis. None of the Green Party candidates of Colo. take special interest money & they are:
Pres. candidates for Green Party: Dr. Stein (Physician- Concern for Nuclear Plant contamination & healthcare provisions) & Mesplay (Scientist, concerned with fires & emergencies connected with Global warming), Ms. Barr (Concerned with the many problems in the world today including: Media propaganda & exposure, large division between wealthy & poor in U.S. & barriers of racism, class, sexism, homophobia, ageism disability, religious and friend or foe to U.S. colonization goals.
U.S. House of Rep.
-Dist 1: Gary Swing: Concerned with injustice in voting system in Campaign financing & voter representation, Violence, lies, corruption, secrecy from Pres., CIA, and other powers high powers
-Dist 2 Susan Hall: All the above & water contamination with fracking, the NDAA & other similar bills that the Republican-Democrat parties are causing the Constitutional & rule of law based U.S. society to a military-forceful control by the powerful rather that the liberty & justice for all.
-Dist 5 Misha Luzov - Running against the Rep. Lamborn who does not believe in the rights of freedom of speech or trials, Misha also is very aware of the dangers of Nuclear contamination & the ultimate cost of of in health and finances in the cases of fall out.
-Colo. House Dist 5: All the above and known for organizing local Boulder Barter group, recognizes the struggles of the poor, and the need to work for the people's education
Commissioners with Green Party-Against GMOs, especially on public land
Steve Schechter in Gunnison - Also very concerned about Gunnison having the water it needs
Karyna Lemus- El Paso county, all the above

You guys are something else. You want money for reasons I don't understand and you don't back candidates who refuse to be influenced. Your definition of special interest money is skewed as any dem or rep automatically is a special interest. How much money have you taken in to list the names of half a dozen candidates and are you backing candidates financially. We seem to only agree on one thing. Money buying our politicians provides the best government money can buy and it represents the money. So I have run an assembly race on $600 and you won't even list my name. And you ask me for money. I can't stand politics, being indoors or around most groups of people. I ran for assembly because we need 1000's of someones like me who will represent people and nature. You folks should be ashamed

Pete Ashdown

Pete Ashdown (who is vying for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate to unseat Orrin Hatch) in Utah, has pledged not to take PAC contributions, and what's more, the primary plank of his 2012 campaign is a constitutional amendment requiring public financing for federal campaigns. It's essential for Ashdown to win the nomination this Saturday (04/21) to send a message that a strong candidate committed to campaign finance reform can win against a politician who is one of the most beholden to special interests. Pete Ashdown has come out strongly against the corporate leverage in Washington and you can find out more about him at PETEASHDOWN.ORG

In 2012, I'm Only Backing Candidates Who Pledge to Get Money OUT of Politics -- Like Dan Kildee from Flint ...a letter from Michael Moore

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011
Friends,
I have many things I'm planning to do in the New Year -- walk three miles a day, use an eco-friendly laundry detergent, write fewer anonymous letters to Wolf Blitzer -- but I want to declare, right here, that one of my top priorities in 2012 will be to spearhead a drive to remove ALL money from our electoral process, period. Nothing -- and I mean NOTHING -- we want to accomplish, from creating jobs to protecting the environment to preventing wars, will happen as long as those who hold the purse strings are the ones who own our Congress.
This destruction of our democracy can only be stopped if the majority of us make it clear that we will ONLY vote for those candidates who sign a pledge to make it their TOP legislative priority to push for a constitutional amendment prohibiting any person or entity from donating ANY money to a candidate's campaign (and that includes a millionaire candidate buying his own election). Plus, they must pledge to back a law banning elected officials from working as lobbyists after they leave office.
The majority of Americans already support strong campaign finance reform and lobbying bans. So what are we waiting for? Now is the time to act!
Here is the wording to the constitutional amendment we need:
Section 1. All elections for President and members of the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate shall be publicly financed. No political contributions shall be permitted to any federal candidate, from any other source, including the candidate. No political expenditures shall be permitted in support of any federal candidate, or in opposition to any federal candidate, from any other source, including the candidate. Nothing in this Section shall be construed to abridge the freedom of the press.
Section 2. The Congress shall, by statute, provide limitations on the amounts and timing of the expenditures of such public funds and provide criminal penalties for any violation of this section.
Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) has already introduced a "Plan for Washington Reform" that, among other great things, creates a lifetime ban on any member of Congress becoming a lobbyist.
So here is the copy of the pledge we expect those running for office to sign this year:
"I, (name of candidate), promise to make it one of my TOP priorities to introduce and vote for a constitutional amendment that bans all financial contributions to all candidates running for office. I will support legislation that publicly funds all elections and legislation that bans lawmakers from working as lobbyists after they leave office. If I do not do this, I promise not to run for re-election."
One of the first candidates running for Congress to sign the pledge removing money from politics this year is in my hometown Congressional district of Flint, Michigan! His name is Dan Kildee. He not only wants the money out of the electoral process, he wants corporations declared as NOT people. Dan is already refusing to take any corporate PAC money or any money connected to Wall Street or the banks.
And how have the people in Michigan responded to a candidate like this? The early polls show Dan in the lead -- because the voters are sick and tired of the way it's been for so long.
But, until Dan (and others like him) get elected so they can overturn the rule of the 1%, none of this will change. And under the current system -- irony alert -- they can't get elected without money. Wouldn't it be great if this were the last election I'd have to write a sentence like that?
Will you help me show how powerful the public's support is for cleaning up Congress by backing the only person running for Congress from Flint who is on our side? This is not just some symbolic cause. I believe Dan will get elected -- especially if he has our grassroots support.
Please take a minute to click here and donate $10, $25 or more to Dan's campaign. He's pro-peace, pro-choice, and ahead in the polls. He will fight to tax the rich and the corporations like General Electric and Bank of America who pay no taxes at all. I have known this man since he was 18 -- when he first won a seat on the Flint School Board. He comes from the working class and he has been a local public servant his entire life.
I'm asking you to do this also as a personal favor to my hometown which is still suffering from crushing unemployment. More people per capita live in poverty in Flint than any other city (100,000+ population) in America. They have no money to donate to a fighter like Dan. That's why I'm asking you to help in their stead.
Many of you have been writing to ask me what "practical" things you can do to be part of the movement sweeping the country. Well, here's your chance to do something tangible, even if it's just kicking in five bucks. Send Dan Kildee to Congress!
And insist that those running for Congress in YOUR district sign the pledge and commit to removing money from politics. We have to start somewhere -- and I guess Flint, Michigan, is as good a place as any to begin! Please join me in doing so.
Yours,
Michael Moore

P.S. The New York Times this week had a story about how nearly half of all members of Congress are millionaires -- and many of them got that way after getting elected to Congress. This is a disgrace. Congress's wealth has gone up 15% in 7 years while the average American's has gone down. Congress is bought and paid for by the 1%. Instead of the rich having just 1% of the influence in Congress, they have 100% of the say. This has to stop now. Let's elect 435 Dan Kildees this coming year!
Andrew Been
Hi,
I am currently seeking the Democratic nomination for HD 34 in Colorado. Until I qualify for the primary, I will not take donations, however, having read this site, once I open up for dontations, I will not take corporate or union donations. I prefer to that most donations come from consituents within the area I'd represent. I'm always bothered by requests for donations for candidates who are far away... I feel like that takes away from the process in a certain way, just as large organizations take away from the process of constituents influencing who gets the support.
My web site is: http://www.been34.us
I guess if Buddy Romer can be a candidate on the list, so can I....
Thanks, and Best of luck to everyone who decides to run in 2012.
RE: Jared Polis
I noted that you list Jared Polis as one without any PAC contributions. Well, that is easy when one is extremely wealthy as he is. One report recently listed him as one of the wealthiest members of Congress. But, does that "gold star" by his name imply that only the wealthy are entitled to serve because they can be self-supporting? What about the concept of a "citizen legislature" in which individuals can be elected to serve whether they are wealthy or poor. The logic expressed in the posting about Mr. Polis suggests he is somehow more worthy because of no "PAC" donations. That very logic leads to elitism. Currently, a large number of our federal legislators are men of women of means-- has that served us well? Many would argue that people like Nancy Pelosi are disasters to our government. Our very president-- BHO-- is also a man of substantial means, even as he plays the class warfare game and seeks to divide our nation.
All I'm suggesting is that you need to be sure your war against "large corporations" doesn't result in an elitist government, and the rest of us being like serfs.
Businesses as well as Legislators
We need a list of businesses that do not make political contributions. For example, I was considering moving my bank account from Wells Fargo to Bellco Credit Union until I learned that Bellco contributed 50,000 to a campaign against Rep. Joe Rice in 2008.
Not only do we need a test for legislators to vote for, but for businesses to do business with.

Campaign Finance Reform Made Simple
Heavens to Betsy! When I was finance director for a congressional
race a hundred years ago, I deleted most of the names from the usual donor
list. Why? Because most were “tainted” and I didn’t want their questionable
reputations to slop over on the candidate.
Sure, we raised a pittance, but at least it was an honest pittance. Today –
candidates “boast”- in your face - about the millions they collect from
verifiable corrupt bastards.
Here’s my old - campaign finance reform idea. BYW, Sue O’Brien
liked it. A lot.
On first contribution to a candidate, an individual donor
must register with campaign. When that individual donor’s *cumulative
contribution reaches a ceiling – within its own one year (date begins upon
first contribution), then that’s it! Individual cannot give another cent to
that candidate.
Win or lose, within 3 months after end of campaign, candidate
would be required to give any monies left over to their favorite charity. NO
carry over ever!
*Cumulative:
Regardless the group donor gives money to, PAC, Union, whatever, the
individual must still must reveal his or her identity (register), and their
contribution tracked and shut off when it reaches the ceiling.
The same ceiling would apply to the candidate, for yes, startup
dollars are to be expected, BUT, no loans in excess of that ceiling.
Simple for FEC to execute, for campaigns violating said ceilings
would be handled accordingly. It would be very revealing to see which incumbents and new
candidates would embrace this exceptionally simple campaign finance reform.

Susan Meek is not only running without special interest money but she is bringing to light the partisanship in the Douglas County School Board election.
